About the Project

Node brought together professionals with backgrounds in home building, scaled engineering, and technology to produce homes that were built differently.

I started with Node just focusing on the home building process itself but quickly got more involved with the technology itself, from the home selection process to the hardware itself. I was the Head Designer, doing everything from feasibility studies, schematic design, permit sets, design development, and construction administration. I was able to work on the technology side of things with the CTO, where I helped design the experience of the material selection and eventually, the hardware for the sensors we were installing in the homes.

Activities: Research, UX/UI Design, User Interviews, Journey Maps, Competitive Analysis, User Personas, Wireframes, Digital Prototypes, Information Architecture, Branding (Graphics, Pitch Decks, Explainer Videos)

Wire-framing the Material Selection Process

Planning how people were able to select the materials and finishes of their home proved to be a more difficult task than first anticipated. Node was built on a foundation of minimal environmental impact to the planet so material selections and options had to be properly vetted first before we could put together pricing packages for clients to select.

In order to allow the home owners to visualize the material selections in the homes themselves, each finish was rendered into the space so that they could see an interpretation of the finished materials. Wire-framing out the process helped me better understand what renderings I needed to produce in order to move the process forward.

Rough Prototyping the Material Selection Process

The wire-frames we developed were not ready to be used by clients so we used PDF documents to allow clients to choose their finishes. It ended up being a great usability study the basis of what we built the platform itself on.

Rough Prototyping the Material Selection Process

As it came time to build the selection process itself, we started using Adobe XD to layout exactly what that would look like. The PDF from the last round were too overwhelming and we wanted it to feel like a simple process, so we followed the web design and went from there.

Conclusions

The projects I worked on at Node were everything from permit sets to web development and prototyping to sensor housing design - the biggest takeaways I learned were that innovation does not happen overnight but that having something "not quite perfect" but presentable can inspire much more important conversations than having perfect final products.

Bridget is a consistent and smart top performer in our business that isn’t afraid to lead, accept new challenges, or jump in. It’s refreshing to see her attitude and focus on making constant improvements to not only her responsibility areas but the company as a whole. Bridget is a team player and helps build a culture of excellence wherever she goes. I would gladly welcome Bridget on any team I lead, work on a team with her, or work on a team led by Bridget. I’m excited to see the change she will bring to the ecosystem over the next decade.
